Ankita Konwar on ‘fake hypocrites’ says people from the Northeast become Indian only after medal

People used to leave comments like ‘corona’ or ‘chinki’ on her posts

As Manipur-based Mirabai Chanu is applauded for winning medals at the Olympics, fitness enthusiast Ankita Konwar wonders if the people of the North East need to win medals to be recognized as part of the country. She recently took to her social media handle and talked about racism in India. She also slammed ‘hypocrites’ who celebrate a northeasterner’s victory when they represent Indian and win medals, but otherwise subject them to racism and harassment.

“If you’re from Northeast India, you can become an Indian ONLY when you win a medal for the country. Otherwise we are known as ‘’Chinky’ ‘Chinese’ ‘Nepali’ or a new addition ‘corona’,” she wrote. She further added, “India is not just infested with casteism but racism too. Speaking from my experience. #Hypocrites,”

It’s not going to change by one person. I’m just trying to make it clear that these things exist in our society, says Konwar, 29, from Assam.

Opening up on what prompted her to give words to her thoughts, she tells us, I know people who call individuals in the North East Chinki; I corrected them several times. Now I see them come out and say: I was so proud of you. When you see a message like that you say to yourself, Oh wow, now you think we’re part of India, but when I’m there with you, then you don’t. It’s only when someone wins a medal that you can be a part of the country, so what about the rest of us.

There are some who disagree with her point of view, and she asks: what is it to disagree when someone shares their experience with you? It doesn’t matter. Your disagreement has nothing to do with what I have faced all my life. You can’t come and tell me what I experienced was a lie. We cannot close our eyes to the things that are happening in front of us. How long are you going to sweep it? You have to be brave to face the flaws in the country’s system.
