The Flying Sikh within A couple of days after returning negative and after being shifted out of the Covid-ICU, four-time Asian Games gold medallist Milkha Singh passed away due to post-Covid complications at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) hospital here on Friday. He was 91. “Dad just passed away,” his son and legendary golfer Jeev Milkha Singh confirmed TOI over a text message.
President of India wrote: “The passing of sporting icon Milkha Singh fills my heart with grief. The story of his struggles and strength of character will continue to inspire generations of Indians. My deepest condolences to his family members, and countless admirers.”
Prime minister wrote on his Twitter handle: “In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions. Anguished by his passing away.”
Bollywood is remembered and got emotional at the death of iconic athlete, Mikha Singh.Many Bollywood stars also showered their condolences,Star such as Sunny Deol,Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Tapsu Pannu, Akshay Kumar and others tributes to ‘The Flying Sikh’ on social media.
Sunny Deol wrote, “The nation will remember you & seek inspiration from your life forever. #MilkhaSingh.”
Akshay Kumar wrote, “Incredibly sad to hear about the demise of #MilkhaSingh ji. The one character I forever regret not playing on-screen! May you have a golden run in heaven, Flying Sikh. Om shanti, Sir.”
Priyanka Chopra wrote, “Warm and welcoming, you made our first meeting so so special. Shah Rukh Khan tweeted, “The Flying Sikh may no longer be with us in person but his presence will always be felt and his legacy will remain unmatched… An inspiration to me… an inspiration to millions. Rest in Peace Milkha Singh sir.”
His wife, Nirmal Milkha Singh died of Covid-19 at the age of 85 on June 13. The legendary athlete is a four-time Asian Games gold-medallist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion. He is still the only Indian athlete to win Gold in the Asian and Commonwealth Championship. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his sporting achievements.
